Lanka +

Lanka +, the only registered NGO for PLHIV (people living with HIV) Sri Lanka, was established in 2001 to provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS. There are currently over 100 registered members, regardless of race and religion, who have access to various services from Lanka +.

Lanka + has now become a support centre for people infected with HIV. While their services are many, the organization is 100% dependant on donor support to fund its activities, including administrative costs. The objectives of Lanka + are guided entirely by the requirements raised by its membership

Amongst its mandate Lanka + staff visit members who are hospitalized and provide them with meals, clothing and other requirements when in hospital as most of the time their family either cannot visit them due to the distance from their villages or as they have been abandoned. Furthermore Lanka + provides members with medicine and traveling costs to visit the hospital for check ups as they are reluctant to seek medical care due to financial difficulties. Most often Staff visit PLWHAs when they find out that they are depressed and unwilling to visit a doctor or are facing mental stress due to contracting the illness. Through the provision of financial support Lanka + seeks to encourage members to obtain access to proper medical care.

Most PLWHAs are disowned by their families when their HIV status is revealed. When they succumb to AIDS most often there is no one to pay for funeral arrangements and Lanka + steps in and undertakes the funeral arrangements
